Mercedes-AMG introduced their new electrified 3.0-liter six-cylinder inline engine at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show and it's going to appear in the CLS53, E53, and E53 Cabriolet. The engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and delivers 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. Pretty good numbers for a hybrid.
Impressive numbers out of a hybrid for sure. Not surprising to see AMG shifting towards hybrids/EV's as it should address most of the issues surrounding their less than stellar fuel economy. I don't think they've released any information about what to expect MPG wise, with this new hybrid system and I wonder just how much of an improvement we will see.
As long as they also make it sound good then I will be in support. The last thing I want is for a higher performing 6 cylinder engine from mercedes that doesn't sound like it should. If not i guess we'll have to depend on aftermarket companies.
Hopefully the transition to a 6 cylinder is balanced out by the additional electric motors. I don't think that Mercedes will release an AMG, 4 door or not that doesn't match the performance and sound levels of its current models.
