Mercedes-Benz is planning to take part in the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with the AMG GT3.
Riley Motorsports will be fielding two AMG GT3 cars in the GT Daytona class and a third vehicle will be competing under the SunEnergy1 Racing banner at the start of the 2017 season. One of the Riley race cars will be partially sponsored by Mercedes-AMG with the second one fully sponsored by WeatherTech themselves.
No matter the team, Mercedes will be supporting all AMG GT3s with parts from its North Carolina headquarters and the automaker will send out a team to provide help if needed. This offer applies to every team including those with customer owned cars.
Racing for team Riley Motorsports are co-drivers Ben Keating and Jeroen Bleekemolen, and team WeatherTech will have co-drivers Cooper MacNeil and Gunnar Jeannette. The latter has already run practice laps in September at Germany’s Hockenheim circuit. Owner and driver Kenny Habul will be leading the SunEnergy1 Racing team.
"Our Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car has already proven itself in worldwide competition and should quickly become a fan favorite. We are very excited about our prospects for the 2017 racing season,” said Dietmar Exler
, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA.
The 6.2-liter-powered AMG GT3s will be going up against rival models from Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche next year.
