Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe Hybrid Is On The Way

Though we have no clue as to when a high performance hybrid variant of the new 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coup will arrive. Brand chief Tobias Moers spoke with AutomobileMag at the Geneva Motor Show and hinted towards an arrival date sometime in 2020, so long as nothing goes wrong.

“Now, at AMG, hybrid is a performance hybrid. It’s not necessarily a long-range hybrid. But it gives you some freedom to ride purely electrical… Even on a racetrack it should be capable to run lap after lap without any loss of state of charge and state of energy in the battery,” said Moers.

This won’t be your average plug-in hybrid as the standard AMG GT 4-Door’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine can already produce 577 hp and 533 lb-ft of torque. Those with the ‘S’ designation is even more impressive, delivering 630hp and 663lb-ft of torque. The latter’s output is enough to rocket the vehicle from 0-62mph in just 3.2seconds and that’s without an electric motor.

Unlike the two-door GT, the 4-Door uses AMG Performance 4MATIC+ intelligent all-wheel drive, which can switch between rear and all-wheel drive when the situation calls for it. The same system may make its way into the hybrid model, though a rear-wheel-drive version hasn’t been ruled out.

With how much instant torque hybrids can put down, I'm willing to wait until 2020 to get my hands on one and it's based on the AMG GT 4-Door. Assuming Mercedes doesn't de-tune the V8 engine, a hybrid motor can give the numbers a substantial boost.

Too bad that as it stands right now we don't know much about the future AMG hypercar. For all we know this AMG GT 4-door could be sharing driving tech with it to a similar extent of the Acura RLX and NSX has.

Sure looks like they bolted on an AMG GT front bumper on a CLS.

Now that you mention it, the side profile does look a lot like the CLS. That's fine by me because I like the angled, pinched metal lines running along the side of the current gen model.

Kind of like what Pontiac did with the Tojan, I expect more from AMG.

I foresee the AMG trim shifting towards hybrid/electric powertrains. Mercedes has some big plans for its EQ line and they haven't made any mention of what high performance vehicles they want to bring there. I know we already some pics of an electric SLS test mule.
