You don't say? Now that we're through with the witticisms, it does not make business sense for Mercedes. As was already pointed out the SL has carved out a niche for itself in the price range a GT roadster would be most likely positioned. Why would they replace the SL with a nearly identical product if the SL does not need to be replaced?

I'm sure the SL is already well amortised meaning pure profit, so it would make more sense to scrap a paid back asset for an identical one that will require spending? That sounds like expensive redundancy....

As a coupe i like it better, IMO I just think that the roof lines really help to complete the whole design, but even as a roadster it still looks good to me.

I suppose that it is true that the two would be nearly identical.

At least there still is that option if some one wants a drop top, just get the SL.

Just read an article that seems to point towards an AMG GT roadster happening... eventually.

Quote:
A rumor emerged on the eve of the AMG GT's reveal which indicated the model will be sold only with a fixed roof. Apparently, Daimler is afraid an AMG GT Roadster would cannibalize sales of the SL-Class and the upcoming S-Class Convertible. However, things have changed since then as AMG CEO Tobias Moers didn't deny plans of an open-top version but most likely it will take a while until the model will reach the assembly line
So it seems like the thing to ask may be "when" instead of "if" the AMG GT roadster will happen.

Why could you care less for it? What is it about it that you don't like?

The extra weight would reduce performance a bit, but it might be nice to drive around with the top down.

I wonder if they'll kill off SL to make room

Good question. It certainly seems like the trend is towards more and more models instead of eliminating some. I think they might keep them both around and see if they are cannibalizing each other or not.
